It's the future and the US has made some very interesting and questionable tactical decisions in a war that took place two generations before the book. As a result, Rachel and her mother have lived in relative seclusion on the US side of The Line, a barrier that separates them from Away. The stories told about Away are fantastical and Rachel wonders what really lies on the other side of the Line.
This has to be the longest introduction to an actual story ever. The only thing that happens in the book is the establishment of some pretty lengthy (and sometimes dry) backstory. The next book seems like it will be more interesting but I wonder how many people will struggle through this first book and give up.
