Burning Up by Caroline B. Cooney

Cooney, author of "Face on a Milk Carton" and other award-winners, has a talent for creating readable romantic mysteries. Her characters are believable and the lovey-dovey stuff is never over-the-top. Burning Up is a great example of Cooney at her best.

Main character Macey is a typical girl growing up in a typical wealthy community. She believes all is well in her town and in her family. When a school project leads Macey to investigate the burning of a building on her road, she starts to discover that nothing in her world is quite as perfect as it seems. This book is incredibly thought-provoking. Themes like the danger of secrets, the fallibility of family, and the burden we all share to make the world better keep you thinking beyond the final page. It was a really good book.

  1. Wow, this book is really good. It made me cry when the girl died, and it made me realize a lot of things about racism. I recommend this to anyone.
